Sleep Ties Our Health And Bodies Together

Thomas Dekker, a 16th century Elizabethan writer, once said “Sleep is that golden chain that ties our health and our bodies together.” It’s amazing that almost four hundred years ago, sleep was acknowledged as being such an integral part of our lives!

The health benefits of a good night sleep include: decreasing heart disease, improved memory, improved mood, better weight management, alleviating stress, quicker recovery from surgery and increased longevity.

Even though we recognize the value of sleep, the hard part is finding ways to get as much as we need.  Especially for the elderly, getting enough good sleep can make a crucial difference in their general well-being and in the lives of those who care for them.

Here are 10 helpful tips for sleeping better.

  1. Exercise regularly.  Even just 10 to 20 minutes a day can help.
  2. Avoid eating a heavy meal before bedtime.  The digestive system needs rest too.
  3. Don’t nap more than 30 minutes during the day.  Too much nap time during the day will confuse your body’s natural sleep rhythm.
  4. Get 30 minutes of daily sunshine, in the morning if possible.
  5. Follow a set bedtime schedule.  Your body will listen eventually.
  6. Avoid alcohol and cigarettes, especially near bedtime.
  7. Start winding down an hour before you plan on sleeping.  Everything is better with preparation.
  8. Make sure your mattress and pillows are comfortable.  Pamper yourself.
  9. Keep pets out of the bedroom.  A tranquil, quiet environment is best.
  10. Stretch to loosen muscles and ease away the tensions of the day.  Consider yoga.
