Nursing Assistant Care: Beyond the Basics

Nursing assistants are valuable members of the Best Care team. Each nursing assistant is trained in evaluating clients and providing excellent health care service.

As a caregiver, a nursing assistant is able to perform many important procedures in assessment and daily activities such as checking vital signs, bathing and skin assessment, toileting, transfer and ambulation, eating and nutrition, following the Plan of Care, and documentation.

Beyond the basics, nursing assistant care offers other benefits to the client and family:

  • The nursing assistant is the “eyes and ears” of the health care team. As a hands-on caregiver, the nursing assistant is able to observe all aspects of the client’s condition. From daily self-care tasks to food preferences, the nursing assistant can notice and report even slight changes that indicate a need for a different treatment or medication.
  • Because the main responsibility of a nursing assistant is to be present and watchful, the client benefits from companionship. The nursing assistant becomes familiar with the client’s likes and dislikes, schedule, and history. Warm conversation and an atmosphere of caring can develop; the chances of loneliness and depression are decreased.
  • Client safety is the primary goal of all caregivers. Training of all nursing assistants is focused on safety in every aspect of care. Nursing assistants are skilled at positioning, transferring, and preventing falls. They know how to best assist with activities such as feeding and bathing.
  • Nursing assistants enjoy their work. They like the hands-on care that they are able to give, and the satisfaction of knowing they are helping a client maintain the best possible quality of life.
