National Sandwich Generation Month Recognized by Florida’s Registered Nurses

National Sandwich Generation Month is now upon us. So it’s a good time to reflect on the state of our country’s population. According to a 2013 Pew Social Trends report, close to 50% of all Americans over the age of 40 are caught up in a sandwich situation, which means that they are presently caring for an adult child or parent. And that extra responsibility is clearly taking a toll on them emotionally, physically, mentally and financially.

On a positive note, there are resources that overextended Americans may turn towards to lessen their load. One of the most beneficial resources in that regard is today’s registered nurses. They have expanded their role beyond the borders of hospital and doctor’s office thresholds to include round-the-clock, in-home care and telemedicine services. And the definition of in-home care, as a whole, has also expanded with the times.

Nowadays, registered nurses are taking a more prominent role in a in-home patient’s case management and actively helping to guide families and professional caregivers alike through the maze of contemporary, long-term care solutions. They are also providing direct, hands-on care to in-home patients that need it. The level of direct care will vary based on the registered nurse’s training and the patient’s needs.

For example, some sandwich generation members may have a loved one that needs trach, CPAP, IV or catheter care. Such situations would typically call for a registered nurse with acute care experience. Other sandwich generation members may simply need someone to monitor mom or dad’s medications to help avoid potential side effects or accidental overdosing. In that case, a registered nurse with a firm understanding of pharmacology, polypharmacy and geriatric diseases would be best.
