Best Care’s Registered Nurses Shine a Spotlight on Florida’s Heart Health

In honor of American Heart Month, our registered nurses wanted to shine a spotlight on the Sunshine State’s cardiovascular health. So we turned towards the Florida Environmental Public Health Tracking site for help. They keep record of the number of heart attack hospitalizations and heart attack emergency room visits that occur each year across the state. According to their latest figures, more than 40,000 Floridians age 35 or older were hospitalized due to a cardiac arrest and more than 2,800 visited an emergency room for heart attack related complaints in 2013. The 2014 statistics have yet to be revealed. However, we suspect that they will fall in the same ballpark.

The good news is that heart disease related deaths in Broward, Palm Beach and Miami-Dade Counties have been slowly declining over the last three years. We suspect that has a lot to do with the quality of healthcare available in those areas as well as Floridians’ shifting interest towards maintaining healthier lives. That can be seen by examining the data provided by America’s Health Rankings. Their research shows that the rate of preventable hospitalizations in our state has decreased.

On the downside, their data also shows that there is still great room for improvement. Many of our state’s residents remain inactive, obese and not as up-to-date on their health care knowledge as they should be. They also continue to smoke, which can all contribute towards the prevalence of heart related problems. With that said, our registered nurses know that in order to improve our state’s cardiovascular health, there is still a lot of community outreach and at-home care work that needs to be done. At Best Care, we’re up for the challenge.
